The situation
Located at 447 Collins Street in Melbourne’s bustling CBD, the Collins Arch development is a world-class mixed-use building which offers spectacular views of the city. 164 metre towers are connected by an eight level elevated sky bridge which spans 14 metres. Within the precinct are apartment, hotel, office and retail spaces.
A highly intensive schedule is required in order to maintain the pristine facade of this building. Rope access systems to allow window cleaning and other facade maintenance work to be conducted safely and effectively were required. Not only did they have to allow ease of use and good manoeuvrability for the operator, they also had to ensure the ultimate in height safety was being provided.
Additionally, within the brief, the designer wanted as little visual impact on the architectural lines as possible.

Solution
Kattsafe's s suspended rigid 130 rail and standard rail products were chosen for their rope access functionality and aesthetic simplicity.
The intricate design required a system that could follow the many curves of the facade walls without causing any interruption to the architectural vision.
BMUs (Building Maintenance Units), with custom designed rigid 130 rail trolleys, were also included into the design and Kattsae worked alongside the BMU supplier to engineer an innovative system utilising Kattsafe rigid rail trolleys.
To begin production, detailed drawings were created and then manufacture began for this ground breaking integration.
Now completed, the project is a shining example of collaboration and innovation, and proof that design, functionality and safety can go hand in hand without compromise.
Rigid Rails can be used in both rope access and fall arrest applications.
