New RL429T rung ladder platform revised configuration

Today I’m going to be going over RL429T and how we’ve revised this platform for configurations, so it gives us a lot more flexibility.

Firstly, I want to point out that you’ll notice here that we have the platform as a KOMBI configuration, allowing a lot more flexibility and allowing for the system to be flat packed and easily transportable. We’ve also allowed for the bracings to be completely adjustable depending on the situation of whether you have a cladded building or a concrete type wall situation. We’ve also allowed for the support battens here to be a lot more adjustable, giving us flexibility for the top landing to always be able to be levelled at 3 degrees as per Australian Standards.

So these are the few changes that are coming through with our new platform system which are starting shortly in the production team, so we look forward to supplying these to you from now on.

Now I’ll be going over the basic installation criteria for this platform.

Firstly, I want to point out the difference between the cladding type arrangement and the concrete wall type arrangement. So the cladding here, as you will notice here we have these two braces, two angles with the two braces, now these get fixed into the purlins with supplied Tek Screws. So it’s a 14 gauge Tek Screw that’ll come with the system. With the concrete system it’s exactly the same brackets. The difference here is that we use 10mm or 8mm screw bolts or trubolt system. They will be supplied with the fixing pack. This assembly, this angle here, may be cut down if required. So, that kit will suit both the wall cladding system with purlins and a concrete wall mounted system.

So, starting off the installation the first thing we’ve got to look at is the support battens. You’ll notice we have two support channels here. The support channels must be secured with 4 x 8mm bulb type rivets and the EPDM seal underneath the rivets. The positioning of these channels is critical in relation to the cantilever of this platform here. So you’ll notice you must allow for at least 750mm for the ladder, then you have the gutter. So depending on the width of the gutter or even if you are on a barge end of the roof, will depend where this platform is situated on the roof. So, once you have that dimension, the platform length is 3.2 metres long. So once you’ve allowed for the 750 or 800mm for the ladder plus your gutter the rest will then be on the roof area. Once you’ve allowed for that you can then position your battens front and back. So your two main channels, or the support systems, is what supports the platform.

Next is you’ll need to assemble the KOMBI platform system. So, as mentioned, it is a KOMBI system. We have a link up here to the KOMBI manual or click here to view a quick video on how the platform is assembled. The cross supports must be situated at approximately 650mm apart, remembering that they can go up to 700mm for a standard walkway system. Now we are using the mini mesh or the 300mm narrow mesh for this platform system so we will need 3 fixings across the width of the platform fixing down this walkway. So, one on the edge, one in the middle which sandwiches both of the walkways panels and then the last one on the edge as well and that goes all the way to the back.

Finally there’s an edgebar for both sides, a walkway edge bar. The one on the other side, there is a yellow edge bar for the edge for the side you will step down onto the roof. Remember any step down or varying in height you do require a yellow edge bar in that area. So that will be provided with this platform.

So once you have the platform assembled we’ll then lay the platform on top of the channels that we have already mounted or supports onto the roof deck and then we will mount the posts. Before we mount the posts slide the splice section up inside the post, that will give us the adjustability. So we slide the splice up and then we mount the post obviously in line with the channel.

So making sure we’ve got sufficient cantilever out the front, we will then mount the post to the platform and with the splice inside, remembering that this will still be loose, we can now adjust the platform to the required height, again remembering that we’ve got to keep it level within 3 degrees for a top landing. So with the four splices being able to adjust in any direction that’ll give you the flexibility to ensure that the platform is level. Once you get it to the required height you can then fix off with the Tek Screws, so two screws to hold this splice section here, and two Tek Screws in the base against the channel section.

So, once you’ve got all four supports secured and fixed we will then continue with the bracing. Again, as mentioned before we have the two angles. So, these angles are 1800mm long which is enough to support over two purlins. So, it must be supported on the purlins. This cannot be attached to the cladding only. It will be fixed through the cladding into the purlin. So, just to re-emphasise that, that the Tek Screws go through the cladding into the purlin in the area where the pan is right against the purlin area, so there’s no gap.

So, we have two Tek Screws at the top and two at the bottom as shown in this detail here, so 4 x 14 gauge Tek Screws, again they do come supplied with the kit. Four Tek Screws per angle and they get fixed to the purlin on the top and bottom.

Now, the brace is then supported as shown and that can be fixed at any position along this angle here. So you’ll notice the bolt that is used, we use a M10 x 75 bolt. The bolt goes all the way through the angle and must get through bolted through the KOMBI 60 section. But depending on where these angles are that brace can basically be mounted anywhere along that angle, provided it is no closer than or provided it doesn’t create an angle that’s less than 45 degrees. So, as you can see here 45 degrees is the absolute minimum angle from the platform that that brace can be situated.

Alright, so once you have that in position another thing to mention is that this top bracket here must be situated on the inside of the platform as you can see here with the two T-Bolts and then the T-Bolt into the extrusion. It must go on the inside of the platform because we have a bracket coming on to the outside to mount the ladder system.

Then finally once you’ve the braces all in place we will then assemble all the guardrail, the handrail and kneerail sections as per our SENTRY installation manual and toe board as well.  And then the next view here shows us this bracket. So, this bracket is different to our standard brackets in that it’s a 400 gusseted bracket but it has the walkway fixed to the top of this bracket and it’s protruding so that it will meet up with the walkway on the platform here. Also bear in mind that this is interchangeable so we can use this bracket on either side depending on which way your your ladder will come up. Now this bracket gets fixed with two T-Bolts as shown so insert the T-Bolt pre-assemble it through the bracket and then make sure the T-Bolt goes into the middle slot on the KOMBI section.

A couple other things to note here so when you bring your ladder section up remembering that your top rung must always be level with the platform that you exit on, you’ll notice this kneerail and toe board section, this little section here, the only way to support that is to fix it to the side style of the ladder section. There’s no post, there’s no room for a post in there, so that’s where those two get fixed off. This handrail kneerail here does not need to be supported by the top ladder section nor does this top one here however bear in mind that 100mm is the maximum gap that is allowed at this top section here wherever you have a gap between your styles and the handrail section.

Alright so that then takes you to the end of the main platform installation.

So, just to recap when you have the angles on a cladded wall system with purlins obviously fixed into the purlins not the cladding, very important. Bracing gets bolted onto that, then gets fixed the KOMBI platform. KOMBI platform on this area with adjustability making sure that your platform is 3 degrees within any direction.

Now lastly we have a bit of a a guide for calculating the distance between landings. I’m sure most of you have got this already worked out however a simple way to work this out is that you’ll notice that a 75 degree angle, when the ladder is at 75 degree which is our preferred angle, the vertical height 290mm. So, although the run spacing is at 300, 290 is our vertical height. So, whatever your landing spacing is that should be divisible or in increments of 290mm then that’ll make sure that you get the even rung spacing required as per Australian Standards. If you happen to not have the space for 75 degrees remember any angled ladder is better than a vertical ladder so even if we went at 80 degrees well then the vertical height is 295. So, dividing that up 295 should then give you the required spacing between your landings.
