As demand for cloud computing, artificial intelligence and sovereign data storage continues to grow, CDC Data Centres is expanding its Melbourne campus with the delivery of the BK2 Data Centre in Brooklyn, Victoria.

Designed by EJE Architecture and constructed by ICON Constructions, the facility forms part of a broader campus that will ultimately deliver more than 350MW of capacity across Brooklyn. The site has been developed to support high-density data storage, government hosting requirements and large-scale AI computing infrastructure.

The BK2 Data Centre required safe access to a wide range of plant and equipment throughout the facility, particularly the generators responsible for powering the entire site.

With tight construction programs and critical commissioning milestones in place, the access solution needed to be:

  • Lightweight to minimise crane lift and installation time

  • Fast to assemble on site

  • Easily adaptable to suit changing site conditions

  • Available with minimal lead times to avoid project delays

The access system needed to connect to existing walkways and provide safe, reliable access to the power generators and cooling tower infrastructure. Without these stairs in place, the plant equipment could not be commissioned, making them a vital component in the project's completion schedule.

Kattsafe supplied a comprehensive package of roof access and fall protection systems across the facility.

On the roof, aluminium walkway systems were installed to provide clear access routes around mechanical plant and equipment. Fall arrest anchors, static lines and guardrail systems were strategically positioned to protect maintenance personnel when working near roof edges and navigating rooftop plant areas.

A key component of the project was the deployment of multiple aluminium modular access stair systems and elevated platforms for power generators and cooling equipment access. Designed for rapid assembly and installation, the lightweight modular systems enabled Eastern Height Safety to install the structures efficiently while reducing crane time and on-site labour requirements.

Because the systems are modular, they could be readily adapted during installation, helping the project team respond quickly to site requirements without the delays often associated with custom-fabricated alternatives.
