The challenge
The Victorian Heart Hospital's striking architectural design presented a unique access challenge.
Its complex curved façade required a rope access system capable of following varying radii and contours while maintaining the visual integrity of the building. The solution needed to provide safe access for ongoing maintenance without detracting from the hospital's award-winning design.
The building owner also wanted a practical way to manage future façade maintenance and glass replacement. With large areas of glazing incorporated throughout the façade, traditional Building Maintenance Units (BMUs) would have added significant installation and ongoing maintenance costs.

Our solution
Kattsafe supplied and engineered an extensive access and height safety package valued at almost $400,000.
At the centre of the project was a custom curved Rigid Rail system, engineered to follow the building's complex façade geometry while maintaining a low visual impact. The system provides safe and efficient rope access for maintenance teams and supports glass replacement activities when required.
This dual-purpose approach gave the building owner a practical alternative to a traditional BMU system, reducing complexity while providing greater flexibility for future maintenance works.
The project also benefited from increased support spans, helping minimise the number of structural connection points required across the façade.
Other products installed were concrete mount anchors, rung ladders, guardrail and walkway and static lines, which now provide user friendly fall protection and roof access for maintenance personnel.
Together, these systems provide safe, compliant access for maintenance personnel across the facility.
As Barry Voss, Kattsafe Sales Manager, explained:
"Providing a system that could support both rope access maintenance and glass replacement delivered significant value for the building owner. It created a practical solution for ongoing façade maintenance without the cost and complexity associated with a traditional BMU."
Key benefits
Custom curved Rigid Rail designed to suit the building's complex façade geometry
Low-profile solution that preserved the architectural vision
Safe rope access system for ongoing façade maintenance
Capability to support future glass replacement activities
Reduced reliance on costly BMU infrastructure
Increased support spans to minimise façade penetrations
Safe and compliant access across multiple maintenance zones
The successful delivery of this project was made possible through the expertise and workmanship of APS Industrial Services, one of Kattsafe's valued installation partners.
The result is a facility that combines world-class healthcare with practical, long-term access solutions that support safe maintenance for years to come.
