Waterloo Station is part of Sydney Metro’s rapid transit network, helping shape a new chapter for inner-city Waterloo. Its design draws on the area’s rich natural landscape, Indigenous heritage, and layered social and industrial history, creating a space that’s not only functional, but deeply connected to its surroundings.

The challenge
Waterloo Station features a striking 16m by 24m artwork, Footprints on Gadigal Nura by Indigenous artist Nicole Monks. Positioned beside the escalators, the piece is a large sculptural map made up of more than 100 cast aluminium footprints, each representing locally significant sites. These forms were created from the actual feet of community members, adding a deeply personal layer to the installation.
With a cast aluminium structure and electroplated finish, maintaining the artwork’s quality and visual impact was essential. Regular cleaning and polishing are required to preserve its appearance.
The challenge was to deliver a safe, compliant access solution for both installation and ongoing maintenance, without disrupting the architecture or visual integrity of the space.

Our solution
To meet these challenges, Kattsafe supplied the rigid 130 rail system, designed to deliver safe, reliable access without compromising the space.
Its lightweight construction made installation efficient, particularly within a complex architectural environment. The system’s streamlined profile allows it to sit neatly within the structure, remaining largely out of sight while preserving the visual impact of the artwork.
The system’s smooth traversability also played a key role during installation. It allowed the Karabiner team to move freely and position themselves with precision, making it easier to safely install the artwork onto the wall without disruption.
By integrating seamlessly into the building, the rigid 130 rail provides discreet, compliant access for both installation and ongoing maintenance, supporting the long-term care of the artwork without detracting from its design.
