Yarra trams workshop, Preston VIC
Melbourne's biggest tram redevelopment project has transformed the original Preston Workshops into a state-of-the-art maintenance workshop.
The situation
The scope of works included laying 7 km of new tram tracks, re-configuring the heavy maintenance facilities, creating new servicing and sanding areas and the construction of additional storage, workshop, administration and training buildings.
Steep skillion roof pitches created challenges for personnel to access and egress machinery and plant safely on a regular basis.
Within the workshop, a system enabling operators to perform their work easily while still working safely needed to be supplied.
Solution
Working alongside Coleman Rail and Kattsafe's Approved Installer, our team designed access and fall protection systems for Yarra Trams and their workers.
The installation took place in several stages and consultation and on-site visits were necessary to confirm exact requirements and to ensure that the client's need for compliance and ease of use was being met.
Throughout the large scale facility rung ladders and step ladders were installed to provide fall protection and give personnel access to the varying roof levels. Guardrails, walkways, and static line provide much needed mobility to roof top plant and equipment and allow maintenance tasks to be carried out efficiently.
The workshop areas have been fitted with rigid rail fall arrest systems, positioned above the work area. They enable work on the trams to be conducted safely and although fully connected to fall arrest devices, there is minimal restriction. Operators can perform their tasks effectively with the confidence that only comes from knowing that you are safe.
Kattsafe systems are manufactured to comply to Australian and New Zealand Standards and are provided with comprehensive installation and operation manuals to ensure compliant installs and operator competency. This offers Building Owners peace of mind that they are fulfilling their requirements and Duty of Care to their workers, particularly important with Manslaughter Laws that can now see them held responsible in the event of a workplace death.
