Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Melbourne VIC

This visually stunning building required systems that would not impact its aesthetic and additionally would not cause any damage to the impressive glass facades.

The situation

Modern and streamlined, the home of the Peter MacCullum Cancer Centre officially opened in July 2016.

This $1 billion construction houses some 96 overnight inpatient beds, 110 chemotherapy, medical and same day beds, six operating theatres, a dedicated clinical trials unit and educational training spaces. Adding to the complexity of the building is a network of link bridges which connect to four new floors on top of the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

This visually stunning building required systems that would not impact its aesthetic and additionally would not cause any damage to the impressive glass facades.

There was also necessity for the supply of other height safety equipment for the whole facility to provide access and fall protection for maintenance staff.

Solution

This large project required the installation of majority of our products and systems.

Step ladders, rung ladders, stairs and platforms provide access onto and between roof levels. Designated walkways and guardrails are now installed on the roof tops. Static lines and our anchor points were installed for fall arrest use.

Access to the facades for maintenance and cleaning was provided with the installation of rigid rails. Hidden snugly under the canopy of many of the facades, they offer the operator easy movement whilst being barely visible to the eye, which was in keeping with the designer's vision.

Rigid rails also enable multiple workers to be connected simultaneously at one time, providing cost savings for maintenance work.

Among the other products installed, a quantity of fold down ladders were used to provide a unique solution for internal access. Due to their location in areas of high public visibility, fold down ladders were the ideal choice as visual impact could be kept to a minimum. Their integration with roof access hatches means access to roof tops can be given to restricted personnel only.

The modular design of our range of fall protection products ensured a smooth and easy installation. With the strict time constraints adhered to it was a credit to the entire construction team when the delivery of the project was completed on time and on budget.
