Hot weather tips to stay safe
Summer has hit, are you keeping your cool?
For those of you working on high buildings and rooftops the heat can be particularly severe and you must at all times be aware of the effects that prolonged exposure in the heat can have on you.
Keep hydrated
Yes, we know it's basic but surprisingly this is one of the main things that people forget. Always keep a good supply of water on hand and don't forget to sip frequently to maintain your fluid levels.
Time to check your PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Now that the warmer weather is upon us, remember that you should adjust your harness gear to suit the lighter clothing that you are wearing. Ill-fitting, loose harnesses are dangerous and ineffective.
Our winter weather can be particularly harsh and it can often cause damage to equipment that has been exposed to the elements. Why not take this opportunity to do a proper check of all of your PPE for wear and tear and replace anything that is broken, frayed or looking tired? Clothing, hats & sunscreen
Sunburn, heat exhaustion, sunstroke and skin damage are very common risks that occur from exposure to our hot Australian sun. The UV factor in Australia is amongst the highest in the world and can cause major health risks to our bodies if we do not safeguard against it. The use of hats, sunscreen and clothing with a high ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) can all assist in warding off the damaging effects of the sun. Don't forget about your eyes either and use sunglasses to avoid cataracts, macular degeneration and other eye problems.

Check your fall protection systems
Make summer the time to inspect and check all your fall protection systems. With the onset of the warmer weather it is a perfect time to see if all of your systems have survived the winter storms.
Are all of your guardrails and walkways providing adequate access to your mechanical plants?
Do you have a new plant on the roof that requires access and maintenance?
Are your static lines, rigid rails, anchor points all rust free and firmly secured?
While you are ensuring your systems are fit for use why not also determine if there have been any changes to regulations or standards.
