NEXTDC S3 data centre, Artarmon NSW
NEXTDC, a new Data Centre facility located in Artarmon, less than 10km away from Sydney's CBD will offer organisations over 20,00m2 of IT space, as well as highly secure, native access to a range of cloud platforms.
The situation
NEXTDC, a new Data Centre facility located in Artarmon, less than 10km away from Sydney's CBD will offer organisations over 20,00m2 of IT space, as well as highly secure, native access to a range of cloud platforms. In addition to interconnecting directly with NEXTDC's S1, S2 and S4 Sydney Data Centres, S3 will seamlessly integrate into the national digital infrastructure platform of NEXTDC.
It goes without saying that this type of infrastructure needs to be safe and secure in order to deliver such dynamic and integral services to a wide range of businesses.
NEXTDC's scope of works was to be carried out in two stages. The first stage was the installation of systems that would enable regular maintenance of the glass facades. The second part of the project was the fitout of access systems to provide personnel designated walkways to give them the ability to safely and easily access the roof top plant and equipment.
NEXTDC S3 - Artarmon Data Centre
Australian designed and manufactured height safety products for safe facade access and roof top plant and equipment maintenance
Partnering with our Approved Installer, Karabiner Access, Kattsafe designed and manufactured customised access and height safety systems, worth an approximate value of $200K.
Facade access was achieved by the installation of rigid 130 rail and rope access davits which offer excellent user capabilities and extremely low visual impact. Further to this design aesthetic requirement, the rigid 130 rail was powder coated and matched to NEXTDC's specified colour. Specially designed cantilever brackets were also manufactured and provided for mounting.
Keeping constant temperatures is an absolute necessity for Data Centres which requires the roof to be accessed on a regular basis to ensure the machinery to produce this stable environment is always functioning at optimum levels. The systems used need a large amount of pipework, electrical cabling and other assorted ducting to operate and this can create trip hazards, making navigation around the roofs dangerous.
In the second stage of the project, elevated walkways and stairs were designed by Kattsafe's inhouse engineering team. The elevated walkways were manufactured to a custom width and the systems were able to be installed in situ requiring no hot works. Any modifications were easily carried out on-site using the patented Kattsafe T-Bolt.

The project was a great example of collaboration with our Installer, Karabiner Access, and also emphasised the value of being involved in a project at the build stage. This ensured any structural requirements or redesigns could be handled at the time rather than later which can cause lengthy delays.
As we move towards the future we can only see the need for Data Centres increasing and we look forward to working on more of these types of project in coming years.
